Le autorità provinciali dello Yunnan, nel sud-ovest della Cina, hanno evacuato più di 150mila residenti a causa dell’ormai celebre branco di elefanti erranti. Lo ha fatto sapere ieri un funzionario locale. Il branco di 14 elefanti asiatici selvaggi sta tornando al suo habitat tradizionale, dopo aver vagato per quasi un anno e mezzo. Domenica scorsa, in serata, il gruppo di 14 pachidermi ha attraversato il fiume Yuanjiang, noto anche come fiume Rosso, grazie all’aiuto di una guida artificiale e ha continuato a dirigersi verso sud, come ha spiegato ieri sera in conferenza stampa Wan Yong, che dirige la sede incaricata del controllo della migrazione degli elefanti.

Secondo quest’ultimo, oltre 25.000 agenti di polizia e personale sono stati inviati sul posto mentre sono stati impiegati un gran numero di veicoli e droni per monitorare e guidare gli animali nella migrazione durante la quale hanno ricevuto circa 180 tonnellate di cibo. Wan ha detto che gli esemplari sono in condizioni stabili. Sono passati circa 17 mesi da quando il branco ha dato l’addio al suo habitat originale in una riserva naturale nella prefettura autonoma di Xishuangbanna Dai dello Yunnan meridionale. Gli elefanti asiatici selvatici, una delle specie più importanti della foresta pluviale, si trovano in Cina sotto la protezione statale di livello A.
